“Then he threatened to sue Irvin for defamation” if he went public with his criticism. He got too many good scoops,” Rindsberg said. “Sulzberger replied that they couldn’t replace Enderis because he just had too much access. Enderis even parroted the Nazis’ claim that Poland invaded Germany to spark the war in Europe in 1939, not the other way around.Ī fed-up Times staffer back in New York, Warren Irvin, complained to publisher Arthur Sulzberger about the glaring bias. Under Enderis, bureau reporters won Pulitzer Prizes as they drew on Hitler’s propaganda to cover the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1938 Munich Conference, when Britain and France tried to appease the fuhrer by giving him a chunk of Czechoslovakia. “That’s because the Times bureau chief in Berlin, Guido Enderis, was a Nazi collaborator,” Rindsberg said. So glowing was its picture of the regime that the Nazis regularly included New York Times reports in their own radio programs.ħ The Times repeatedly claimed that Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick (left) was killed by a Trump-led mob - a story that has since been proved wrong. The paper’s coverage of Adolf Hitler’s Germany in the decade before World War II is an early example of its narrative manipulation, Rindsberg writes. “They make a concerted effort over time that they dig into and won’t let go.” “And with the Times, it’s never just one false claim,” he said. “MSNBC, CNN - everywhere you look, you’ll get that story. “When the Times breaks these stories, it’s wall to wall,” Rindsberg said. With close to $2 billion in annual revenue, the Times has the money, prestige, experience and stature to set the narratives that other news outlets almost invariably follow. And there aren’t many news organizations that can do it.” “It takes coordination, deliberation, and a lot of resources. “But creating what I call a false media narrative is really hard,” he said. “We toss the term ‘fake news’ around as if it’s something whimsical,” Rindsberg told The Post. The chosen narrative, reinforced from multiple angles, is entrenched through a network of stories over time.ħ Rindsberg argues that Times reporters have followed the same playbook since the 1920s. Star reporters cite fuzzily identified sources and make sweeping assertions to support a narrative aligned with the corporate whims, economic needs and political preferences of the patriarchal Ochs-Sulzberger family, which has helmed the operation since 1896, he writes. Rindsberg argues that Times reporters have followed the same playbook since the 1920s. “Rather, they were the byproduct of a particular kind of system, a truth-producing machine” constructed to twist facts into a pattern of the Times’ own choosing, he says. The “fabrications and distortions” he found in the Times’ coverage of major stories from Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Russia to Vietnam and the Iraq War “were never the product of simple error,” Rindsberg contends. “My research churned up not mere errors or inaccuracies but whole-cloth falsehoods,” Rindsberg writes in “ The Gray Lady Winked” (Midnight Oil), out now, which examines how the nation’s premier media outlet manipulates what we think is the news. Both confirmed the assumptions of the nation’s left-leaning media and academic elite, while damaging their political enemies.Īnd both were driven by The New York Times, where malicious misreporting has been the practice for a century, argues journalist and media commentator Ashley Rindsberg. 6 Capitol Hill riot, as reports had claimed, but had died of natural causes.īoth stories were based on anonymous, unidentifiable sources, but had become deeply enmeshed in the public consciousness. I remember taking it once in Chicago, and waking up a week later wondering what had happened in between" - Eldritch (unknown source, quoted on the Dominion mailing list). The comparison between guns and drugs is a typical Eldritch riff, notably "a gun for a lover and a shot for the pain inside" from Temple of Love. 'Hot metal' is probably a reference to the needle, though it might be something to do with guns. Methedrine is a form of amphetamine and is apparently best taken intravenously. Lucretia Borgia was a notorious poisoner, c.f. The Family Borgia were notorious power freaks operating in renaissance Italy, famous for their unscrupulous operating techniques, and much admired by Machiavelli. He asked for his name and reluctantly, he replied. Hiei was injured during the fight and Kurama took him home and nurse him. Hiei attacked Kurama, thinking he was the demon who eats girls. Kurama was walking with a girl named Maya, who confessed to him that she loves him dearly. There he met a boy named Kurama, who was 14 yrs. Hiei was not able to find Yukina in the Makai, so he left for the Nigenkai (Human World). Hiei must not tell Yukina that he is her brother. Hiei asked Shigure to teach him swordsmanship, Shi’ agreed for a price. In his state Hiei was very weak, so he returned to Shigure. He refused and Rui told Hiei of his sister Yukina and that she had left to find him. At first she didn’t know who Hiei was, but as she did, Rui fell to her knees and baged him to kill her. With the Jagan he was able to track down the Koorime’s island, where he found Rui who led him to Hina's grave. He gained back his power when he learned the jagan's techniques, the Kokuryuha (the Black Dragon Wave) and what we call Maijin Hiei, his transformation process where he has numerous eyes on his body which turns green. Hiei's power sunk from A class to a lower C or D, but he understood that the jagan will come as useful. He did so and Shigure gave him the 'jagan. Hiei demanded Shigure give him a Jagan eye (a third eye), but he would not unless Hiei told him his life's story, and it had to be "interesting". To search for them, he went to a demon named Shigure, a master surgeon. Now Hiei had two things in which to look for, his home and his tear jem. He was able to save himself, but all he could do is watch his tear jem fall to the river below. Hiei and the jem proceeded to fall off the cliff. The demon swung it sword, Hiei doged, but the sword cut the string used to hold the jem around his neck. He was fighting a demon and was push back to a cliff. His only pursuit was strength and blood lust. He carries his katana (sword) everywhere as means of weaponry. As he grew more and more powerful, the thieves left him perhaps out of fear, for at the age of 5, he was already an A class demon. He learned survival skills, thievery and such. A band of thieves picked up Hiei in the forests of the Makai and took him in as one of them. Before she did, she told Hiei that if he must, he should come back and take revenge upon the Koorimes but kill her first for it was her falt. Thus, he was given the title, "The Forbidden Child" and was thrown overboard by Rui, Hina's best friend. However, this kind of action is considered a sin in the Island of the Koorimes, which floats above the Makai. Hina shed two tears which turned into gems, one for Hiei and one for his sister, Yukina, who is full fledge Koorime. Hina, for an unknown reason leaves the Koorime's floating island, she mated with a fire demon and bore his son. Hina is born a Koorime, a race of self-reproductive ice demons who are all female. Hiei is the offspring of a mating between a Koorime (Hina) and an unknown fire demon(It's said his father is an unknown demon, but as Hiei is half fire demon, one would believe that came from his fathers side and not Hina). Height: 4'8'', Yuusuke is 5'8'' (same as me) and Hiei comes up to his sholder, which is 46 ins or 4 feet 8 ins. I am particularly fond of wholesome gay dynamics, and who DOESN’T love the bubblegum pixie holding hands with the angry goth? Queue up the Pacha hand gif, please.Age: If I had to guess, late teens early 20's by the way he acts. His macabre and delightfully aggressive personality melded well with the more elegant and calm Kurama, and the two of them quickly became one of my favorite ‘ships. Think Garfield the cat, but agile and loves killing people. Each one of the characters had their own distinctive personalities and quirks, and Hiei was the brooding and biting asshole of the group. One of the Yu Yu Hakusho hallmarks was the infamous boyband also known as Yusuke’s gang. Even after over a damned decade of being introduced to him, I still remark fondly on this tiny ball of rage and roasts. This pipsqueak’s image comes to mind immediately when listing my top five faves. Like legitimately, this dude was totally evil at one point before transitioning over to anti-hero and then to ‘apathetic hero with a heart of gold buried way deep’. Known to be the smallest and yet one of the most deadly main characters of the hit shounen anime Yu-Yu Hakusho! Hiei has cemented himself in anime history as one of the baddest of the bad. Hiei is one of my favorite anime characters. The Rail Corridor is a 24km hiking trail built around abandoned railway tracks. Here's an adventurous, hands-on way you can discover Singapore's past. Top Tip: If you're cycling, you should pair your trip to either a trip to nearby Pasir Ris Park or the Punggol waterway (like a mini Venice in Singapore with 5 picturesque bridges!). If you're lucky you may also spot its resident family of otters! There's little to do at Coney Island, but that's also part of its charm. Our favourite parts of it are the towering Casuarina trees (feels like a forest in Europe!), the mangrove walk and the tiny hidden beaches all around the island. You can rent a bike at nearby Punggol, or just explore leisurely on foot. If you don't have time for Pulau Ubin, go to Coney Island instead - it's a little tranquil piece of paradise in Singapore. You name it and we have it - you can do pottery in cute backyard gardens, paint & play a ukulele, perfume making with scent engineers and even learn how to be a tattoo artist!ĭo you love getting creative? We love this because it's a sign of Singapore being more open and creative as a city, and Singaporeans wanting to chase their creative passions! In recent years, lots of really cool crafty experiences have popped up in Singapore. Ps: Wild Rice Theatre is based in Funan so you can check out the rooftop skyline view after the play! We would highly recommend catching a play here! Lately, they've been telling compelling Singapore stories in ways that are both moving and incredibly thought provoking. One of our favourite local production houses is Wild Rice. Singapore's local theatre scene has been getting increasingly dynamic and exciting in recent years. This is a unique walking tour meets immersive street theatre - where you get transported back to the 1960s in Singapore, during the heyday of the cabaret! That's why we're so excited to see alternative stories of Singapore told through art and theatre, and passionate artisans carving their own paths in creative industries from leather-making to glassblowing. Growing up, Singapore didn't encourage Art & Culture activities, and pursuing the arts was a form of rebellion for many. Sneak away to this little-known roof garden for a great night view, or even have a BBQ here with friends (you'll need a permit for the BBQ)! Not many people know this but the top of Funan Mall is one of the best places to see Singapore's skyline! It's only accessible from the lift at Lobby B - and when you take the lift to the top you'll find a roof garden overlooking the spaceship-like Supreme Court, Marina Bay Sands, Esplanade, the Singapore Flyer etc! Even though it is small, it is still a vibrant and welcoming place. Today, it is the last kampong in Singapore, with only 26 families remaining. It is a living reminder of our past, a time when life was simpler and more connected to nature.Įstablished in 1956, this used to be a sprawling kampong with over-40 families. This is one of our favourite unexpected experiences, because it reminds us of how far Singapore has come in just one generation. Here are some experiences that tell meaningful, alternative stories of Singapore, and show a different side to our city. We love Gardens by the Bay, but Singapore is so much more than manicured attractions. Want more?
